Project Brief

Rising amongst the skyscrapers that shape the Canary Wharf skyline is Newfoundland, a striking diagrid structure, due to complete during the 2nd quarter of 2020, it will be the UK’s tallest build-to-rent development.

Having topped out to reach its full height of 220 metres (729 ft.), the tower is set to be a world-class, mixed-use development with 62 floors featuring 636 high quality private rented apartments, retail space and residential amenities.  Since construction began in 2015, over 14,000 sq metres of pre-cast concrete plank and 9,500 tonnes of structural steelwork have been erected.

MIDFIX was commissioned to provide the concept design and structural calculations of the pipe supports, and provide an anchor fixing solution from the pipe supports to the metal deck slab in the plant room.

Solution

It was important for our pipework support to be light weight to avoid further increasing steel beam loads, therefore Framo was chosen for its light weight and durability.

Another challenge encountered was to reduce the vibration from the chillers in the Pump Room. Structural vibration was minimised by installing bearing pads between the pipe supports and top roof steel beams.  We used heavy-duty beam clamps to secure the brackets from the main steel beams.
